It is SUPER Tuesday!
Of course we all have the ill fortune to live in a politically marginalized state, I think CNN will run the primary results from Dogpatch, Erewhon, The Commonwealth of Brigadoon and Barsoom before they get to Massachusetts. We will be lucky if the final numbers run before the Farm Report tomorrow morning.
But that is no excuse, if Massachusetts is dismissed & disliked we still need to get out there and cast our ballots like a free people.

An attack on the high cost of college tuition?
Good Idea Mister President.
Next to health care, educating one's offspring has to be the second biggest stressor currently bankrupting the middle class in the USA.
So any attempt to talk up this issue is a worthwhile thing sez Humble Elias.
You'd think in a education economy rigged to produce MBAs and Lawyers some economy of scale would be effected, but ohhh noooo, tuitions skyrocket forcing students and parents into ruinous debt which is turn strongly conditions private innovation in the USA.
After all, if you have run up 100K in tuition loans, upon graduation are you gonna become a drone at IBM for steady money or maybe take a flyer on that anti gravity idea you got in "Comparative Religions" class?
The very picture of a "bubble" waiting to burst.
The other reason I'm living the current pushback on tuition costs is that it obliquely raises the point that mere education itself may not be the most effective method to address chronic income disparities in the USA.
Metaphorically speaking, how can a first class college education change up yr SES if from the git-go you and yours are debtors?
It is more akin to the perpetual of a form of sharecropping conditions in the middle class.
Just sayin'.

The GOP clears out of DC
just as President Elect Obama arrives for the inaugural.
What better way to duck responsibility for their foreign and domestic catastrophes than to fly off to Las Vegas or Mustique to wallow in whiskey and football?

The rest of the country wonders if they'll still have a job in sixth months and the GOP can think of nothing except ordering up another plate of jumbo shrimp.

Is Barack Obama a nerd?
Or a geek or a dork?
That seems to be the big question this week, it is the holiday season, the cabinet is picked and other than watch the global economy collapse there is a shortage of soft news for the media to report.
This is a narrative woven out of a stray Star Trek joke that Obama made during the campaign and the fact that he once read Spider-Man comics in high school.
Thin stuff if you asked Humble Elias and you haven't.
To tell the truth, the term "nerd" has undergone a sea change since Barack and I were teenagers in the late 1970s.
THEN it was bitter pejorative usually fastened to bookish outsiders in order to reinforce a rigid and short term hierarchy in US middle and high schools.
NOW it denotes a playa n the US technology economy as well as a particularly powerful subset of consumers. The rise in "nerd culture" and "nerd economics" is supposed to herald a great change in the way the USA views intelligence and creativity...or so Time Magazine and that ilk insist.
To quote the olde misanthrope "what rubbish!"
Concentrating on this buncombe neatly sidesteps any discussion of stagnant wages in the US and our suicidal policy of national de-industrialization.
It is in fact, False consciousness and for better or worse it largely defines the current debate over the rise of "nerd culture" in the USA.
"Nerd" is a fallacious class distinction and a bizarre one in an economy largely driven by technological innovation. The larger question is how well does that economy do in terms of moving new cadres into the middle class, educating the poor and working class and spreading prosperity around in general.
the answer to that is, it doesn't do that very well at all no matter how cutting edge the new I-Phone may be.
AS for Obama, he is far too charismatic, sporty and focused to pass muster as a survivor of ye olde geekerdom circa 1979.
Moreover, reading "Spider-Man" was no great dork signifier back in the day either, one of the star basketball players at my tiny marginal parochial high school was a fervent reader of Spider-Man and didn't give a hoot in hell who knew it either.
And no his name wasn't Barack Obama either.

One of the hardest routines in the Presidential Playbook
is winding down an unpopular war.
Nixon for example for all his cunning made a hash of exiting Viet Nam thanks to his morbid greivances and petty power mongering all of which undercut any attempt to build bipartisan consensus behind a new policy in Southeast Asia.
Obama at least understands that nothing can be done in Iraq without consensus here at home. Part of building consensus means bringing in a national security team with a diverse range of opinion. then it's up to the President to set policy and see matters thru. The main thing here is, Obama knows he cannot prosper in office with the war going on and on, he needs a dignified exit, that is at the core of his mandate. Hilary Clinton and General Jones can read election returns pretty well, they wouldn't have signed on if they didn't know in broad terms what the new policy would be.
Besides, Democratic national security teams tend towards caution and have an outward conservative cast...a legacy of McCarthyism even in the 21st century.

A few months ago,
the friend of a friend duly forwarded to me the internet canard that insisted that Barack Obama was a muslim terrorist "Manchurian Candidate" who refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance at some damn event. I made some polite noises and included a link to snopes refuting all and sundry. Now today I offer you all a clip of Senator Obama leading the US Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance...so that nasty little meme is gonna go away....RIGHT? LIKE HELL IT WILL!
Frankly it is almost embarrassing to have tyo post material like this, there is something sordid about refuting deliberate liars...but must needs when the devil rides.

Tim Russert on Imus in the Morning...
Honest to ghod, does Tim Russert have any other mode save pompous, smug and condescending?
He was on Imus this morning, seemingly unaffected by his testimony at Scooter Libby's trial, the fact that he has been outed as willing lackey of the White House bothers Phat Tim not one whit. In fact, Russert devoted a good chunk of the interview trying to make Barack Obama out to be a hypocrite...well sheee-it Tim would know all about that now wouldn't he?
For over a year, Tim Russert knew who was peddling Valerie Plame's CIA status all over town and more importantly he knew WHO that guy worked for.
Did Tim speak up?
Of course not, Tim Russert is the Vice President's b*tch...not to put too fine a point on it or anything.
If Tim Russert has a weakness it lies in his vulgar self worship, he really does see himself as a lonely crusader against hypocrisy and corruption.
Never mind the fact that in reality he is a trembling bagman for a thoroughly corrupt and dangerous Vice President, no Phat Tim looks in the mirror in the morning and Edward R. Murrow smiles back at him.
A little thing like a trial exposing him as a fraud and a sycophant isn't gonna bother Tim one jot....after all a broad helping of shamelessness is pretty much a necessity if you wanna rise in today's DC Punditariat.
